Preserving the Legacy: The Art of Jamdani Care
“A Jamdani is not just a garment; it is a piece of history. Just as it is unrivaled in heritage, its maintenance requires a delicate touch. To ensure your Xamdani remains as timeless as the day you bought it, follow these curated care rituals.”
1. The Art of Storage (Rolling, Not Folding)
Avoid Creases: Unlike regular cotton sarees, Jamdani can become brittle if left folded in the same position for too long, causing the fabric to tear at the fold lines.
Do Not Hang: Hanging a Jamdani for extended periods can strain the weave, causing it to split or weaken in the middle.
The Best Method: The safest way to store a Jamdani is to roll it over a thick paper tube, a wooden dowel, or a plastic pipe (similar to how fabrics are stored in rolls/thaan). This minimizes stress on the weave.
2. The Wash Protocol
Dry Clean Only: Never hand-wash your Jamdani at home with water or detergent. The delicate weave can be ruined instantly by standard washing methods. always opt for professional dry cleaning.
3. Sun-Bathing & Refolding
Fungus Protection: Remove your saree from the closet 2 to 3 times a year and air it out in mild sunlight. This prevents fungal growth and dampness.
The Cooling Period: Never put the saree back into the wardrobe immediately after sunning while it is still warm. Let it cool down to room temperature first.
Change the Folds: When storing it back, change the position of the folds to ensure no single line of thread bears the stress for too long.
4. Hem Protection (The ‘Fall’)
The False Border: You must attach a “Fall” (false border) to the bottom hem of the saree. This protects the delicate Jamdani edges from friction against shoes and dirt while walking, ensuring longevity.
5. Handling Stains & Sweat
Emergency Stain Removal: If you accidentally stain the saree (with oil or food), never rub it with water or your nails. Instead, immediately sprinkle talcum powder on the spot, let it absorb, and gently brush it off.
Sweat Protection: In hot weather, apply talcum powder to your body where you sweat most, and lightly dust the inner side of the saree before wearing. This acts as a barrier against moisture damage.
6. The ‘Kata’ Ritual (Revival)
Restoring the Shine: Authentic Jamdani is woven with starch (Maad) to give it that crisp, new look. After several wears, this starch fades, making the saree look dull or soft.
The Fix: Take your saree for a professional “Kata” (polishing/refinishing) service. This process reapplies the starch and ironing, making your Jamdani look brand new and radiant again.
Perfume Caution: Never spray perfume or body mist directly onto the Jamdani fabric, as the alcohol can stain the zari or discolor the threads. Spray on your skin before draping.
Moisture Control: Since Bangladesh has a humid climate, keep Silica Gel packets or dried neem leaves in your wardrobe to absorb excess moisture without damaging the fabric.
